Alan Johnston
Managing Director

Alan has been involved in the civil contracting industry, with Robinson Asphalts since 1983. Previously he was involved in the demolition industry primarily working on multi-storeyed buildings in Perth, Western Australia as on-site Project Manager. As Managing Director of Robinson Asphalts he has overall responsibility for the company and is still involved in project management, estimating and client liaison, on a daily basis.

Annette (Annie) Johnston
Executive Director

Annie is responsible for management of finance, administration, risk & compliance and marketing. Annie has a strong background in Administration, and has previously been involved in the mining, hospitality, horticulture and media industries. Executive Director of Robinson Asphalts since 1992. Annie is also an experienced landscaper, having been involved in a retail Garden Centre and the horticulture industry for 5 years. Annie holds the NZ Institute of Directors Certificate in Company Direction.

Mark Smith
Projects Manager, NZCE (Civil)

Mark has been with Robinson Asphalts since early 2014 and brings a wealth of experience – practical, technical and managerial. Mark has extensive experience in overseeing and organising large scale contracts and has extremely valuable local knowledge of engineering conditions in Whangarei and Northland. 

Before joining our team Mark was with Kennedy & Associates in a civil engineering consulting role. This role has included overseeing, inspecting, testing and other quality and environmental aspects of works on behalf of Whangarei District Council among other clients. These works have included roading, stormwater and sewer, clay capping, environmental controls, reticulation.
Prior to that Mark was Manager of Hutton & Cameron Contractors for six years and previously Project Manager/Engineer for United Carriers and Culham Engineering.

Peter Evans
Estimator / Contracts Manager, NZCE (Civil & Structural)

Peter joined the team at Robinson Asphalts in 2001 after twenty years with McBreen Jenkins Construction as Foreman and Construction Supervisor. An experienced Estimator with responsibilities for pricing and contract administration. Responsible for large and smaller projects including earthworks / siteworks, roading, stormwater, water and waste water schemes, general civil engineering works, commercial and residential subdivisions.

Peter holds NZCE (Civil & Structural) and has extensive overseas engineering, surveying and supervision experience. He has also been a registered assessor of employee competencies for NZCITO National Qualifications and holds a National Certificate in Civil Construction Works Supervision.

Tom Taylor
Estimator / Contracts Manager

Tom joined our team in 2016 after 3 years with Geocivil Ltd in Christchurch, where he started out as a lab technician, quickly progressing to the role of Christchurch Manager. He has solid experience in managing teams, client relationships, pricing, project planning and coordination, quality assurance, health & safety/compliance. He also has a valuable technical background in testing and investigation of soil, subgrade, backfill and pavement, and compaction. Tom is currently studying towards NZ Dip. Engineering-Civil.

Sam Cowan
Estimator / Contracts Manager

Sam joined us in 2018 and is qualified in Landscape Design and Horticulture. Previously Sam spent 3 years working for Second Nature Gardens in Auckland as a Contracts Administrator/Estimator – delivering high end (up to $700k)  residential landscape builds within the Auckland region in addition to extensive prior landscaping experience both with Second Nature and other Landscape/Nursery employers.  His experience includes both hard and soft landscaping including substantial construction aspects such as retaining walls, concrete, drainage  and bespoke structures. Sam holds both NZ Diploma in Landscape Design and Nat. Cert. Horticulture L4 (Northtec)

Russell Wootten
Operations Supervisor

Russell is a long standing and highly experienced employee who started with the original Robinson Asphalts in 1980 and then continued with Robinson Asphalts 1992 Ltd. With this depth of experience and a multitude of industry skills, Russell specialises in metal preparation and sealing. Responsible for day-to-day organisation of staff / jobs, resources and on-site operations.
